Prof Nigel Badnell, Department of Physics, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow We review our studies of atomic collision processes relevant to the spectroscopic diagnostic modelling of astrophysical and fusion plasmas. We consider dielectronic recombination DR of the Fe M-shell, its benchmarking  by ion storage ring experiments at Heidelberg, and its importance for the modelling of absorption features in active galactic nuclei .
For photoionization, we look at the revised opacities from the Opacity Project OP which include inner-shell transitions and so extend the validity of the OP data into the stellar interior . Finally, we look to the future and the demands of ITER on theory for describing collision processes involving heavy species such as W, Xe.

Our research interests are focused primarily on computational and theoretical physics. We review our studies of atomic collision processes relevant to the spectroscopic diagnostic modelling of astrophysical and fusion plasmas.
A number of them relate to the microscopic properties of plasmas and concern the structure and the collisional behavior of atomic constituents. Although they are clearly of basic importance, their relevance to thermonuclear research was at first overlooked, at a time when most of the effort was concentrated on designing fusion devices and understanding macroscopic phenomena, mostly of an electromagnetic nature.
